Weather tools and resources

Before you can answer the all-important question--"to go or not to go?"--you've got to think long and hard about the weather at hand, as well as the skills and tools you have to deal with it, Editor at Large Thomas A. Horne advised readers of his "Wx Watch" column in AOPA Pilot.

AOPA wants to be sure you have the skills and tools that you need to make a well-informed decision. That's why we offer a broad array of weather resources.

AOPA's Meteorlogix weather service is a free tool for members that provides radar, satellite, and both graphical and text-based forecasts and current weather information to help you "see" the conditions that await you en route and at your destination. For even greater visual acuity, AOPA's Real-Time Flight Planner lets you overlay your proposed route with a variety of weather graphics. A complete list of National Weather Service acronyms is available online to help you decode textual reports.

As the seasons change, weather conditions present new challenges for pilots. If there's a seasonal phenomenon that you want to understand better--say, icing conditions as temperatures begin to drop--the AOPA Air Safety Foundation has compiled a list of Safety Advisors, Safety Briefs, Sporty's Safety Quizzes, and online courses at one location. You'll find these and much more at the AOPA Online Safety Center. Be sure to read the pertinent aviation subject reports, which include articles from AOPA Flight Training weather columnist Jack Williams and AOPA Pilot's Tom Horne, to give you a complete pilot's perspective.

Don't forget that the specialists in AOPA's Pilot Information Center are ready to field your weather questions weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time. Call them at 800/USA-AOPA, or peruse the frequently asked questions database that they have compiled at AOPA Online.

Links to these weather resources can be found on AOPA Flight Training Online.
