AOPA questions Luke Air Force Base proposal

Luke Air Force Base officials are working on a proposal that would create a special air traffic rules area, requiring pilots flying west of Phoenix to communicate with Luke Air Force Base. AOPA will be meeting with Luke Air Force Base officials and local pilots in the near future to discuss the proposal and ways to minimize its effects on general aviation. "Luke Air Force Base officials say the special air traffic rules area is necessary because there have been near-midair collisions between civilian and military aircraft, but there are numerous other alternatives that would mitigate the problem without further complicating communications in the already complex airspace," said Heidi Williams, AOPA director of air traffic services. "Air traffic rules areas are rare and should be implemented only as a last resort."
