AOPA opposes development threat to Palm Springs airport
A request to amend the Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan to allow residential development within the traffic pattern envelope would compromise the safety of pilots and residents. AOPA is opposing the amendment and has pointed out to John J. G. Guerin, senior planner for the Riverside County Airport Land Use Commission, that the safety requirements that prevent homes from being built too close to airports are based on scientific research of accidents at and near airports - they should not be altered. Plus, it would be a matter of time before the new residents started complaining about noise and safety. Such a move also would violate the California Public Utitilies Code, the state's airport land use laws, and the Caltrans Airport Land Use Planning Handbook.
