Student pilot, congressman joins AOPA

AOPA President Phil Boyer this past Tuesday personally welcomed new AOPA member U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) with a visit to his office on Capitol Hill. Boyd is an excited student pilot who had always dreamed about learning to fly. He hopes to take his written test in a matter of days and his checkride in the coming weeks. Rep. Boyd has been learning to fly in a mid-1960s Cessna 172 and, like many students, would like to buy a used Cessna after obtaining his certificate. Boyer offered up two services that any AOPA member can utilize: Web site links to test knowledge before taking the FAA knowledge test, and aircraft purchase kits that cover all that is needed to research and buy an airplane. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Boyd offers a strong voice on FAA funding issues. Besides flight training, the two discussed the upcoming user fee issue. Congressman Boyd cited his belief that there are some things that must remain inherently a governmental function, air traffic control being one of them.
