AOPA advocates for Jekyll Island Airport
AOPA has once again reminded Jekyll Island, Georgia, officials of what their airport really means to them and the nation.
"The true value of Jekyll Island Airport isn't measured in bottom-line dollars," wrote AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn in a letter to the Jekyll Island-State Park Authority. "The value is measured as part of the sum of transportation facilities that make Jekyll Island available to the public. At times, the airport might well be the only way to access the island for emergency situations, and it will definitely be the quickest route."
AOPA jumped in again after learning that the latest island development plan suggested other uses for the land now occupied by the airport.
The association offered suggestions on how to make the airport more profitable and told island officials that there was some $800,000 in federal grants available to them for airport improvements. Dunn said that "by accommodating the 'on the ground' needs of transient pilots and long-term resident pilots, Jekyll Island could position itself as a pilot-friendly community and receive the benefits of revenue produced in this lucrative area."
