A visit to AOPA

As you plan your summer fly-in schedule, don't forget to put a big red circle around Saturday, June 3, on your calendar. That's the day of the sixteenth annual AOPA Fly-In and Open House.

Held at Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) in Frederick, Maryland--the home of AOPA's headquarters--our Fly-In is one of the biggest and best aviation gatherings on the East Coast. In fact, it's such a popular event that for one day each year, the FAA erects a temporary control tower to handle the arriving traffic.

The AOPA Fly-In and Open House is a full day of flying fun--and it's all free of charge: safety seminars, a huge display of aircraft, and an exhibitor tent filled with merchandise for you to try. Tour the AOPA headquarters and participate in a question and answer session with AOPA President Phil Boyer. If you enjoy AOPA Flight Training columnist Rod Machado's monthly column, this is your golden opportunity to hear him live--and it's always a good time when Machado delivers his unique perspective on learning to fly and other aviation topics.

Pilots of all experience levels will discover a tremendous amount of learning opportunities, thanks to a full slate of safety seminars offered by staff members of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. Look for sessions on handling in-flight emergencies, single-pilot IFR, and decision making for pilots, among others.

And don't forget to take a look at AOPA's 2006 sweepstakes aircraft: a better-than-new Piper Cherokee Six. It will be front and center at the static display, and although its restoration isn't complete, you will be able to check out its new instrument panel, engine, propeller, and Speed Spats wheel pants (one of a series of modifications from LoPresti Speed Merchants designed to reduce drag and give this Six a boost in cruise speed).

If you're a student pilot, you can attend the AOPA Fly-In--just ask your flight instructor to join you for the trip. Or ask a pilot friend for a spare seat. Be sure to read the fly-in procedures found on AOPA Online.
