New Orleans Lakefront Airport changes hands

The Louisiana Division of Administration will take over ownership of Lakefront Airport in New Orleans from the Orleans Levee District on January 1, 2007. This move comes after Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco signed a law stripping the levee district of all management responsibilities that do not pertain to flood control and hurricane protection. "AOPA's role is to ensure that the change of ownership will not create a threat for airport closure," said AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn. "The FAA is working with the state to continue providing grant funding to rebuild the airport, which was severely damaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita."
