City council to review Blaine airport land-use report
The Blaine City Council will meet Monday, September 18, to review alternative land-use possibilities for Blaine Municipal Airport. The council had delayed accepting the draft airport master plan until it could examine alternative land uses. "AOPA will oppose any attempt to close the airport," said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. "Blaine is a perfect example of an airport that can become a vital part of its community." Washington State Department of Transportation Aviation Director John Sibold also has stressed the importance of this airport: "The need for a viable general aviation airport in Blaine will become increasingly important as travel trends change, business industry trends change, and the community experiences the significant population growth predicted for the area." Last year, AOPA worked with Blaine residents to prevent a local developer from building a truck stop, tavern, and motel on airport property. The community voted in a ballot measure to reject the developer's proposal and study airport alternatives.
