FAA OKs radio tower at Fullerton despite pilot objection
Despite two fatal aircraft accidents involving a radio tower in the traffic pattern at Fullerton Municipal Airport in California, the FAA has said that rebuilding the tower in the same location would not pose a hazard. AOPA filed a freedom of information request to obtain the FAA's study that determined the tower would not be a hazard. "We've combed through every part of the study, and even though this tower would be an obvious hazard, the FAA has left no holes that we can use to challenge their decision," said Heidi Williams, AOPA director of air traffic services. "We have requested that the tower be lit with high-intensity white strobe lights 24 hours a day to make it more visible to pilots. That's the only recourse available to us." AOPA and local pilots have fought the proposed reconstruction for more than two years.
