AOPA strongly opposes Nevada Assembly Bill 581, which would create a regional airport authority within Clark County. All airports owned by local governments would fall under the control of the new governing body, thereby losing authority over their own airports. In a letter to Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson, chairman of the Assembly Transportation Committee, AOPA voiced its opposition to the proposal. "From our analysis of the bill, we believe that creation of this new authority would be to the detriment of Nevada's important general aviation industry," wrote Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. "[The bill] would strip individual cities and towns in Clark County of their right to manage the operations, impacts, and economic benefits of general aviation airports in their communities." The bill was set for hearing on April 10 but was pulled off the agenda. AOPA will continue to work with the Nevada aviation community to ensure the bill is defeated.
