AOPA responded quickly and forcefully after the Boston Herald newspaper bought into a one-sided story by The Associated Press and printed an editorial calling for an end to FAA funding for smaller community airports. In a letter to the editor that ran in the Boston Herald on April 26, AOPA pointed out that community airports are part of a national air transportation system supported by all of its users. As a comparison, AOPA reminded the newspaper's readers that drivers all across the country picked up most of the tab for the grossly over-budget Big Dig project, which was funded primarily with billions of dollars from the federal highway trust fund.
