Schools and airports don't mix when they are in close proximity. The Placer County Board of Supervisors in northeastern California is prepared to override an incompatible land-use finding by the airport land-use commission (ALUC). The Parkside Nazerene Church wants to operate a middle school in its building 1.15 miles from Auburn Municipal Airport. AOPA has consistently opposed the placement of schools within two miles of airports. Although some incompatible properties were grandfathered into a 2000 land-use plan, AOPA believes that making an exception now would create obvious safety issues and set a bad precedent. "Such uses would be contrary to promoting and protecting the health, welfare, and safety of the citizens of Auburn and not supportive of the overall intent of the policy developed by the ALUC," AOPA wrote in a letter to supervisors.
