Join us in June

What draws you to a fly-in? Is it a chance to mingle with other pilots? The opportunity to fly to a new airport? Or is it the pancakes, the hotdogs, the homemade chili?

Whatever your reason, fly-ins can be the highlight of the flying season. If you live on the East Coast or will be in the area, make sure your fly-in plans include AOPA's seventeenth annual Fly-In and Open House on Saturday, June 2, in Frederick, Maryland (see "AOPA Action," p. 12). If you're a student pilot, grab your flight instructor and make it a dual session that's both educational and fun.

The AOPA Fly-In is a full day of free activities for pilots. Tour AOPA headquarters, attend an AOPA Air Safety Foundation safety seminar, hear a presentation from AOPA Flight Training columnist Rod Machado, or visit the displays--including dozens of aircraft. Get a good look at the 2007 Catch-A-Cardinal Sweepstakes airplane. And yes, there's plenty of food for sale, from a variety of vendors who operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Our convenient location at Frederick Municipal Airport means you really can fly in. If the weather is VFR, expect a lot of traffic (that's why Frederick Municipal gets a temporary control tower just for that day). Be sure to view the fly-in procedures posted on AOPA Online. If you prefer to drive in, that's fine--ample free parking is available.

Traveling by airplane to any fly-in means you'll be entering a high-traffic situation that calls for extra vigilance. ASF's Fly-In Safety page offers you helpful resources such as the Fly-In Safety Checkup, a checklist that goes over contingencies and solutions for those situations not found on your usual trip around the traffic pattern or training flight. So be sure to review it, and then you'll be ready to participate in a safe and fun fly-in season.
