Senator weighs in on proposed tracon consolidation

California Sen. Barbara Boxer has concerns about the FAA's plan to consolidate the Palm Springs Tracon into the Southern California Tracon in June. In a letter to FAA Administrator Marion Blakey, Sen. Boxer asks the FAA to take immediate action to "delay this highly controversial consolidation until there is a much more robust debate and more answers provided by your agency." The senator wants Congress to have an opportunity to evaluate the agency's approach during the upcoming discussion about FAA funding. In fact, she was successful in getting language, which would delay the Palm Springs Tracon consolidation, inserted in the recently introduced Rockefeller-Lott FAA funding bill. Sen. Boxer cited safety and staffing concerns raised by local controllers as more reason for the delay. AOPA had also written a letter calling for public meetings to fully explore the impacts before the plan moves forward.
