Good land-use planning needed for Utah airports
From backcountry strips to Salt Lake International, aviation is vital in the wide-open spaces of Utah. That means Utah has to do more to protect its airports. AOPA Western Regional Representative Stacy Howard recently addressed members of the Utah League of Cities and Towns on that subject at their annual conference in Salt Lake City. AOPA partnered with the Utah Division of Aeronautics and the Utah Airport Operators Association to conduct a roundtable discussion about the economic value of Utah's general aviation airports and the importance of good land-use planning. "Residential encroachment is the No. 1 threat to the future of general aviation airports," Howard told mayors, city council members, and city managers from around the state. AOPA also delivered educational materials, pointed out online resources, and offered to work with elected officials and administrators to help create compatible land-use plans for local airports.
