The Aug. 11 edition of USA Today carried a story about a Transportation Security Administration effort to impose charter-like security rules on pilots flying large Part 91 aircraft.
The TSA plan would affect aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds—primarily business jets and turboprops—so it does not affect the overwhelming majority of general aviation aircraft or pilots.
AOPA supports reasonable security measures but will oppose any regulations that unduly restrict general aviation with no significant security benefit.
“While the details of the proposal rule are uncertain, one of our major concerns is that this is the first time a new segment of the aviation population will be regulated,” said Andy Cebula, AOPA executive vice president of government affairs. “The real effects of this proposal will become clearer after it’s released. AOPA has been working with TSA and the White House Office of Management and Budget to ensure that members’ concerns are addressed in the initial regulatory evaluation of the rule.”
