Aviation should be part of economic stimulus package

Against the backdrop of an official declaration that the U.S economy has been in recession since 2007, state and local officials are calling on Congress and President–elect Barack Obama for an economic stimulus plan that includes extensive infrastructure investment. AOPA is making the case that aviation should not be forgotten in this effort.

“General aviation is vital to this nation’s economic prosperity. That’s the message we have been delivering to President-elect Barack Obama’s transportation transition team and congressional leaders,” explained AOPA incoming President Craig Fuller. “The competition to be in the stimulus package is fierce, but our goal is to include investments that help general aviation.”

Local leaders, including the National League of Cities (NLC), are calling for an economic stimulus package that will use aviation and other transportation projects to create jobs and shore up infrastructure. Obama has said he wants a stimulus package in place, ready for him to sign, when he takes office Jan. 20.
