California land-use bill faces hearing

After years of working with the California Transportation Commission and other aviation supporters to strengthen the state’s airport land-use laws, AOPA is throwing its support behind a bill that will do just that.
S.B.1118, sponsored by California Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino), faces a hearing March 5 before the Senate Local Government Committee.
Amendments, inconsistent administration, and rapidly growing pressure for urban development near airports have weakened California laws protecting airports from incompatible development. But S.B.1118 would strengthen those laws by requiring all counties with at least one public-use airport to have an airport land-use commission. Marin, San Bernardino, and Santa Cruz counties are among those affected by the bill.
“Responsible land-use planning heads off many of the noise complaints and safety concerns that threaten airports,” said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. “This measure becoming law is vital for the future of California’s airports.”
AOPA members in California are urged to contact their state senators and ask them to support this important legislation.
