AOPA steps up effort to protect Maine airport

With a petition for a vote to close Biddeford Municipal Airport in the hands of the Biddeford, Maine, mayor and city council, AOPA is wasting no time to save the airport.

On Jan. 24, AOPA Vice President of Regional Affairs Greg Pecoraro met with the mayor and city manager to discuss the referendum and explain the value of the airport to the local community. AOPA had earlier written the city opposing any move to close the airport.

“Biddeford officials must recognize that we are serious about protecting the airport,” Pecoraro said. “AOPA is working with Airport Support Network volunteer Alan Lyscars and other local pilots who have formed the Friends of Biddeford Airport to educate the community about the airport’s importance before this comes to a public vote.”

The city is obligated to keep the airport open because it has accepted federal grants to improve the facility. AOPA staff will attend a city council work session about the airport set for Feb. 5 at city hall. The FAA and Maine Department of Transportation have also been invited to attend.
