Airport officials in the Phoenix area have been preparing for the Super Bowl for months, meeting with pilots to find the best way to secure the airports and accommodate the anticipated influx in aircraft arrivals. But it is imperative that pilots and aircraft owners do their part to secure their aircraft and hangars.
“The Super Bowl is going to bring a lot of attention to the area, including a national media spotlight,” said Andy Cebula, AOPA executive vice president of government affairs. “Make sure your aircraft and hangar are locked and secured. And if you see someone walking around your airport whom you don’t recognize, approach that person to find out what’s going on.”
AOPA has received reports that investigative reporting teams are already testing security at GA airports in the area.
“The best thing you can do to enhance your airport’s security and prevent it from becoming a story on the 6 o’clock news is to follow the steps outlined in AOPA’s Airport Watch Program,” Cebula said. “And if you do see something suspicious, report it using the Transportation Security Administration’s toll-free hotline 866/GA-SECURE or 911 in the case of an emergency.”
