The North Carolina legislature has granted the University of North Carolina (UNC) system the power to create an airport authority. This could be an important first step in replacing Horace Williams Airport. “Our top priority has been saving Horace Williams, with a secondary focus on ensuring pilots in the area have an airport to use,” said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. “This legislation ensures that there will be a backup in case Horace Williams is closed.” Under the bill, the UNC board of governors may create an airport authority to support the missions of the UNC, UNC at Chapel Hill, or UNC Health Care System. Like Horace Williams, the airport would have to be located in Orange County.
