California airport protection one step closer to reality

The California Assembly Committee on Local Government has passed an AOPA-backed bill (S.B.1118) that will strengthen the state’s land-use laws. On June 18, the committee voted unanimously in favor of the measure, which would require an airport land-use commission in every county with at least one public-use airport. The bill, which was approved by the state senate in a unanimous vote last month, now goes to the full assembly. AOPA worked with Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) to introduce the bill and has been actively working to win its passage. Good land-use planning can preempt noise complaints and safety issues that threaten airports. Marin, San Bernardino, and Santa Cruz counties are among those affected by the bill.
