AOPA President Phil Boyer surprised longtime member Capt. John Miller last night with a presentation of Miller's portrait. Miller was attending the Air Safety Foundation "Collision Avoidance" seminar in Poughkeepsie, New York.

The 95-year-old Miller is still an active pilot. He recently flew his Bonanza on a 32-day trip that took him to California and back. He's AOPA's second oldest member.

Ann Shuey, wife of former AOPA Vice President for Special Projects Marty Shuey, painted the portrait.

Miller has had a remarkable career. As a young pilot, he watched Lindbergh take off for Paris. He was the chief test pilot for the Kellet Autogiro Co. in Philadelphia and flew airmail off the roof of the downtown Philadelphia post office in an autogyro. As a captain for Eastern Airlines, he flew everything from DC-3s to DC-8s.
