President Barack Obama announced Dec. 7 that he plans to nominate transportation policy consultant Michael P. Huerta for the position of FAA deputy administrator.
Huerta currently has a consulting firm, MPH Consulting, that advises clients on transportation policy, technology, and financing. Until April 2009, he was group president of the transportation solutions group of Affiliated Computer Services Inc., a technology services provider supporting transportation agencies across the world. He has held senior positions in the Department of Transportation (DOT) and city agencies.
In late 2008, Huerta served as a member of Obama’s transition team for the DOT. From 1993 to 1998, he served in two senior positions at the DOT, and he has also held senior positions in the cities of San Francisco and New York: He was the executive director of the Port of San Francisco and commissioner for the New York City Department of Ports, International Trade, and Commerce
Huerta also served as managing director with the organizing committee for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is currently chairman of the board of directors of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America.
If confirmed, Huerta will take over for the acting deputy administrator, Lynne A. Osmus. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, who was also nominated by Obama, was sworn in June 1.
