Pilots in Connecticut have a unique opportunity to lend their support to the rescue of an airport in their state. The town of Plainville, Conn., is considering buying Robertson Field from the developer that owns it, and pilots will have a chance to express their support of the deal at a Feb. 9 public hearing.
Under the proposal, the town would use FAA money to help pay the $5.8 million price tag for the 76-acre airport, which is home to more than 110 based aircraft. Using federal funds for the purchase would ensure that the airport remains open and operating for at least 20 years.
Area AOPA members are urged to attend the meeting, set for 7:30 p.m. at the Middle School of Plainville and express their support for the town purchase of the airport.
“It’s not often that a town is ready to step in and buy a privately owned airport to keep it running,” said Greg Pecoraro, AOPA vice president of regional affairs. “Pilots need to get to that meeting and show the town that they support the airport and its continued operation.”
If the town does not purchase the airport, the development company that owns the field could close it at any time.
