After two years of preparation for new additions to the RNAV system in Alaska, the FAA has proposed 23 new routes. See a graphical depiction. In addition, the proposal will revise 14 routes and delete four. The routes are for use by aircraft having IFR-approved GPS receivers that are in accordance with SFAR No. 97 to Part 91.
AOPA and several Alaska aviation organizations worked directly with the FAA to ensure the new routes were designed with the users in mind. The new routes include both “Q” and “T” routes (see “ Learning to Tango” in the March 2009 issue of AOPA Pilot). Comments on the proposal must be received by March 30. AOPA government affairs officials are generally supportive of the changes and additions but are conducting an independent analysis. Formal comments will be submitted if necessary.
