AOPA’s sweepstakes Cirrus will make an appearance at a Connecticut airport this weekend to show support for the town’s plans to purchase the airport.
The 2009 AOPA Sweepstakes “Let’s Go Flying” Cirrus SR22 will appear at Robertson Field in Plainville, Conn., on Saturday, March 21, for an open house designed to highlight the airport’s value to the community. Plainville residents will be voting March 31 on a proposal to transfer the property from private to public ownership, a move that would ensure its continued operation as an airport.
The visit is part of the association’s commitment to a whole year of fly-outs—opportunities to bring AOPA and its staff to pilots and prospective pilots nationwide.
“This open house is a great opportunity for area residents to experience the value of their community airport first-hand,” said Heidi Williams, AOPA senior director of airports. “With the community’s support, the town can secure the future of this airport. We’re showing up to support local efforts so that Robertson Field operates well into the future.”
Under the proposal up for a vote, the town would use FAA money to help pay the $7.7 million price tag for the 76-acre airport, which is home to more than 110 based aircraft. Using federal funds for the purchase would ensure that the airport remains open and operating in perpetuity.
The open house, which lasts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will offer tours and airplane rides for visitors. Town officials also will be attending to answer questions about the vote to purchase the airport. Admission and parking are free.
