The pilots of NASCAR

Fly your airplane to the NASCAR races, then strap into your race car and hit the track? It’s a way of life for six NASCAR drivers as AOPA Pilot Senior Editor Al Marsh discovered when he talked with Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Kyle Petty, Bill Elliott, and Greg Biffle about their driving and flying careers. These fascinating individuals have an undivided and deep-seated enthusiasm for aviation and car racing. Become a NASCAR spectator and witness the video interviews with Kyle Petty and Matt Kenseth that accompany this story online.

Trucking along in the sky

What has a single-engine 675-shp turboprop, a cargo pod, and maybe even a wild paint scheme? A Cessna Caravan 208B, of course. Recently, AOPA Pilot Editor at Large Tom Horne took the left seat of the Caravan to see what the ship has to offer. He was not disappointed. Ride along with Horne as he puts the Caravan through its paces in the story’s accompanying video.

Soaring

Five years ago, Steve Thompson narrowly escaped death in a motorcycle accident, which put his life and flying unexpectedly on hold. But this former AOPA Pilot executive editor would never give up on the possibility of flying again. Just after the accident, the doctors thought him crazy to worry about flying. Chalk one up for Thompson who recently accepted his friend’s invitation to soar again. In an audio interview, Thompson deftly shares his philosophy and human observation as he talks about the feeling of being
airborne again.

The Great War airplane collection

Rotary engines, castor oil, goggles, and a white silk scarf are items inseparable from the Great War pilots and their flying machines in Barry Schiff’s story this month. Relive history in a video clip from the Fly Boys movie by Tony Bill, which featured aircraft from the Aeroplane Collection.
