Waco Experience monthly winner Dick Burkhardt

Jan. 30, 2004 - The winner of the AOPA Centennial of Flight Sweepstakes Waco is going to get a real taste of the past - just ask AOPA member Dick Burkhardt. He's one of monthly winners who recently got to enjoy the Waco Experience at Red Rocks Biplanes of Sedona, Ariz. "The sights of Red Rock Mountains ... flying an open-cockpit biplane ... gave me a reminder of what early aviation was all about," he told AOPA.

Sometime in the next few weeks, one pilot is going to get - and keep - that Waco Experience, when AOPA gives away the grand prize in the Centennial of Flight Sweepstakes. It's a beautifully restored 1940 Waco UPF-7 open-cockpit biplane worth approximately $250,000.

The AOPA Sweepstakes aircraft is a gorgeous red, with black and gold trim. Under the cowling, it has a 275-hp Jacobs radial engine. All of the avionics are new or refurbished and include a Garmin panel-mounted GPS unit and a newly designed audio panel from PS Engineering, designed specifically for high-noise environments such as an open cockpit.

While AOPA prepares to present the grand prize Waco to the lucky winner, work is already under way on the 2004 Win-A-Twin Sweepstakes aircraft - a better-than-new1965 Piper Twin Comanche. The engines are being remanufactured, and airframe modifications are being installed. By the time the Win-A-Twin grand prize shows up at Sun 'n Fun in April, the exterior work should be complete.

Anyone who joins or renews membership in AOPA during 2004 will be automatically entered in the Win-A-Twin Sweepstakes. In addition to the Twin Comanche, AOPA will give away more than 2,300 other prizes.

Complete rules and eligibility requirements are available online.
