Aviation headset manufacturer Lightspeed Aviation has launched a charitable program to benefit nonprofit organizations that help grow the pilot community, educate nonpilots about aviation, and serve others.
The AOPA Foundation is among 20 charitable organizations the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation selected for an initiative that allows pilots to vote for nonprofits to receive grants and to designate a portion of their Lightspeed Aviation purchases for a nonprofit of their choice.
Pilots can vote for a worthy nonprofit at Lightspeed Aviation kiosks at participating airshows or online, and the top five charities as selected by pilots will each receive a foundation grant for $10,000 or more. Grant recipients will be announced throughout the 2010 flying season.
Pilots who have purchased one of Lightspeed’s premium headsets also can designate a portion of their purchase toward an aviation charity when they register the product. Purchasers can designate a donation of $50 per Zulu purchase and $25 per Sierra or Mach 1 purchase to one of the nominated organizations. Gifts will be announced and disbursed by Jan. 31, 2011, according to the Lightspeed website.
The mission of the Lightspeed Aviation Foundation, founded this year, is to “promote a vibrant and growing pilot community, support education that will preserve and extend the future of aviation and use our gifts within the aviation community to serve others for the betterment of our world.”
