Great Content, But...

A FEW MORE Words on the new look

Over the course of the last 10 months or so, I have enjoyed reading Flight Training magazine from cover to cover. I am a 60-year-old student pilot, flying a Cessna 172 Skyhawk out of the Tacoma Narrows airport.

The new format for the magazine is quite well done, and the content is still very stimulating and useful.

Having said that, what is with the tiny black-and-white photos accompanying the columns by Rod Machado, Greg Brown, Ralph Butcher, and the others? I find this to have a cooling effect, frankly, on a previously warm and personal relationship the readers have established with these truly unique individuals.

Flight Training has excellent articles; however, the new “design” was very disappointing, in my opinion—it clearly shows more emphasis on advertising with color ads for almost every advertisement. Just one example: April 2010, page 13, Rod Machado’s Q&A appears shadowed by the color ad adjacent to it. Just my opinion, but thought I would share.

In general I like the new layout of Flight Training. It is sharp, crisp, and it is what people want. Although flying is a complicated subject, I guess we are going to have to learn to teach it in bullet points because attention spans aren't what they used to be. I must admit I find that difficult because I am not a "bullet points" kind of a guy. I like to dissect a subject down to the nitty gritty and be sure I completely understand it.

How many hours?

Learning to Fly Q & A” (May Flight Training) states the minimum hours for a sport pilot certificate is 15 and for private 20, although you state the correct minimums on page 38. Students are confused enough.

Editor’s note: The 15- and 20-hour figures cited on page 39 refer to dual hours, but we should have been clearer in our explanation.
