Air Safety Foundation courses receive distance learning honor

ASF logoFor pilots looking to increase their aeronautical knowledge or refresh their decision-making skills, the AOPA Air Safety Foundation is the place to turn. The foundation’s free innovative online safety courses were honored by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) May 4 with the Platinum level Best Practices Award for Distance Learning Programming.

“Our online safety courses are an increasingly important part of our safety education outreach,” said Bruce Landsberg, president of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. “They allow us to reach tens of thousands of additional pilots each year. We are privileged to be able to offer these courses to pilots, and honored to be recognized for their quality.”

Online courses that were selected include Runway Safety, Know Before You Go, Essential Aerodynamics, and Accident Case Study: VFR into IMC. These courses—and many others—are provided through donations from pilots.

“USDLA takes great pride and responsibility in recognizing excellence and quality,” said Reggie Smith III, President of USDLA. “Through distance learning, education, and training we can provide access to the world's best award winning opportunities for school children, connect higher education students globally and transform the lives and careers of working adults. We are truly on the edge of something great and these winners clearly demonstrate and confirm the transformative powers of distance learning globally.”

The USDLA promotes the development and application of distance learning for education and training, and serves the needs of the distance learning community by providing advocacy, information, networking, and opportunity. Distance learning and training constituencies served include Pre-K through 12 education, higher and continuing education, and home schooling, as well as business, corporate, military, government, and telehealth markets.

The foundation’s online courses are provided by generous donations from pilots. This year, the foundation plans to develop more award-winning online courses on topics including weather, flight risk, preflight planning, and more.
