A temporary flight restriction that will be in place over Chicago May 27 through 31 for President Barack Obama’s visit to the area will require pilots to perform some advance flight planning.
The FAA has issued a flight advisory detailing the restrictions and flight procedures, and alerting pilots who want to operate at Chicago Midway International by pre-screening at specific gateway airports during that time. Pilots must file a waiver 72 hours in advance of their flight into Midway.
The FAA has issued a notam creating a 30-nautical-mile-radius TFR and inner 10-nm-radius GA no-fly zone over Chicago that will extend from the surface up to 18,000 feet msl. It will be in effect periodically from 7:01 p.m. local May 27 through 5:30 p.m. local May 31. The TFR will be centered on the ORD VOR’s 110-degree radial at 13.2 miles. On Friday, May 28, the president will make a side trip to Louisiana. During that time, the TFR over Chicago will be canceled.
AOPA urges pilots to check notams carefully before each flight as the TFR can change with little advance warning. Pilots should call flight service directly before each flight to ensure that they have the most up-to-date information available.
