Flying above a soft blanket

When you fly above a layer of puffy clouds, it’s a tranquil and serene experience. The air is smooth, and you feel as if you’re suspended in space.

As you climb through a cloud layer, the sky magically becomes brighter and brighter, until you emerge into clear air—often in bright sunlight, a strong contrast to the overcast gloom you left behind and below (your sunglasses are within reach, aren’t they?). The ability to fly through clouds does require some additional training; a private pilot certificate and instrument rating are the cost of entry. But those credentials provide you with the key to unlocking general aviation’s capability to provide safe, convenient personal transportation in a wider variety of weather conditions. (Click the image to view it full size.)
