Spins, impossible turns: Real-world emergencies dissected
When should you attempt to make the “impossible turn,” if ever? Could you survive a ditching? Recover from an unexpected spin? Aviation experts will answer these questions and more during AOPA Aviation Summit, Nov. 11 through 13 in Long Beach, Calif.
Popular AOPA Pilot contributor Barry Schiff will tackle the impossible turn debate during his must-see “Engine Failure after Takeoff” forum Nov. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Aviation authority Doug Ritter will walk pilots through critical survival skills for anyone who flies over open water. During “Ditching and Water Survival,” Ritter will demonstrate how aviation life rafts and vests are used and cover ditching, egress, water survival (including hypothermia and the psychological aspects of survival), signaling, search and rescue, and the open-water environment. Ritter, chairman of the Equipped to Survive Foundation, will present on Nov. 11 and 12 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
When it comes to emergency recoveries, many pilots agree that spin (and recovery) training is a must. And they proved it earlier this year with record-breaking views of “Spin Myths” on AOPA Live. Based on the popularity and safety training of spin recoveries, Summit will host a “Spin Myths” forum with Garmin International test pilot Tom Carr and master aerobatic instructor Rich Stowell Nov. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Learning tips for overcoming these emergencies could save your life one day if you are faced with these scenarios. But you can also learn life-saving lessons from other pilots’ mistakes. AOPA Foundation President Bruce Landsberg and the Air Safety Institute will present “What Went Wrong?” Nov. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. and Nov. 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. During the forum, you’ll not only have the opportunity to put on your accident investigator hat and help determine the cause of the accident, but you’ll also learn how to stop the accident chain early enough in the process to prevent poor decisions from turning into a deadly accident. Wayne Pollack, senior air safety investigator for the NTSB, will present with Landsberg in the Nov. 12 session.
