Success Story

Time with dad

His father is his flight instructor

Name: Justin McBurney

Age: 16

Event: First solo

Where: Brown Field, San Diego, California

Airplane: Cessna 150, 152, 172, Piper Warrior, Aeronca Champ

“I’ve been my dad’s student since he has been a flight instructor. This gave me an amazing opportunity to be able to fly and build time with my father. The main aircraft I had wanted to solo that day was a 1946 Aeronca Champ because of the challenge of a tailwheel. It is really fun to fly and it is awesome because it is a part of history, and with no electrical you have to hand prop it to start it. I flew next in a Cessna 150, a 152, a Piper Warrior PA28, then finally in our own Cessna 172. Soloing in all of them was extremely exciting. It is something almost no one else gets the chance to do, especially on a sixteenth birthday. I’m really grateful and I have to thank my father for making it all possible. With his help I hope to get my pilot license on my seventeenth birthday.”
