There’s one thing brothers George and John Kounis know as well as any pilot—there’s nothing like having fun with your airplane. The pair should know: For the past 13 years the brothers have served as editor, photographer, writer, pilot, and purser for their magazine Pilot Getaways, a bimonthly magazine dedicated to private-aircraft travel.
Now, AOPA is partnering with Pilot Getaways to offer members the experiences George and John have been sharing with their readers. We asked these general aviation travel experts to share a few of their favorite fly-in desinations.
On AOPA Online, we are featuring five remarkable fly-in destinations updated from the Pilot Getaways archives. They include the best restaurants, lodging, and activities, as well as fly-in information specific to the area.
Visit Jekyll Island, Georgia, once the exclusive playground for some of America’s richest families; fly just 26 miles off the Los Angeles coast to the Airport in the Sky on California’s Catalina Island; drop onto a tiny stretch of grass that is the airstrip of Wilson Bar, Idaho; see the Victorian splendor of Durango, Colorado; and take a deep, relaxing breath at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort on 2,000 acres in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania.
Next month, five more fly-in destinations will be highlighted.
Pilot Getaways fly-in destination descriptions are being offered on AOPA Online for a limited time. We’d like to know what you think of these in-depth articles from Pilot Getaways. You’ve told us you want more adventure travel for aviators, so please email us what you think.
In addition to the fly-in destination descriptions on AOPA Online, AOPA is also partnering with Pilot Getaways magazine with a special AOPA member subscription price. For $14.95, AOPA members can receive Pilot Getaways magazine in their mailbox every other month. This offer is 50 percent off of the newsstand price and is the lowest price ever offered for Pilot Getaways magazine.
