Bahamas bound

The islands are close and worth the trip

Convincing your significant other to get on an airplane and visit your parents isn’t usually the best way to get buy-in on the whole aviation thing. But flying to the Bahamas is easy, quick, and safe.

Because the economy in the Bahamas is based on tourism, they’ve made it incredibly easy to fly in and clear Customs. As long as you have a valid passport and your pilot and aircraft documentation, it’s a simple form and a small fee. Getting in and out of the United States is a little more cumbersome, but not at all difficult once you get the hang of it. Many FBOs rent rafts and life jackets, and Bimini—the closest island to Florida—is only a little more than 50 miles.

Late fall through winter is the perfect time to visit. Days are often dominated by clear skies and fair-weather cumulus clouds. Air traffic is light, and most flying is done VFR with no air traffic control.
