Pilots take on the Wild West

Is it harder to rope a straw cow or shoot an ILS? Are pilots more likely to find specs of gold panning at a mine or find an NDB that hasn’t been decommissioned while flying cross-country? Step out of the flight levels and into the Wild West during AOPA Aviation Summit in Palm Springs, Calif., with a Wild West Desert Adventure to Metate Canyon and the San Andreas Fault.

In addition to taking a Jeep tour of the San Andreas Fault line, step back in time at an old mining camp where you can take part in music, dancing, lighted dart boards and horseshoes, campfires, an old-time shooting gallery, panning for gold, touring a replica mine, and roping a straw cow. While there, enjoy a barbecue dinner and open bar while taking in the sights and sounds of the desert after dark.

Transportation will be provided from the Palm Springs Convention Center to Metate Canyon (you cannot drive yourself). The shuttle will pick up participants at 4:30 p.m., and the event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Return transportation will be provided from the Metate Canyon to AOPA official hotels at 8:30 p.m. The excursion costs $110 per person; $40 child rate for those 14 and under (no pre-registration available for child rate).
