Ford Motor Co. engineers took the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds as their inspiration for a custom 2014 Ford Mustang that will be auctioned Aug. 1 at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis.

The one-of-a-kind Mustang will be the sixth custom Ford sold in recent years to support the EAA Young Eagles program, which has given more than 1.6 million youths their first flight experience. Customized cars donated by Ford have to date fetched nearly $2 million to support the program, the company reported in a news release.

The 2014 Thunderbirds Edition Mustang GT sports a glossy red, white, and blue paint scheme inspired by the Thunderbirds F-16, along with other features including wide body modifications and a “belly pan” designed to evoke the Fighting Falcon’s lines. A variety of interior modifications, along with custom 22-inch wheels and other performance modifications, set the Thunderbird Mustang apart from the rest.

Bidders must prequalify by contacting the EAA development office at 800/236-1025, or by email.
