Here’s an edited question asked by an AOPA member who contacted AOPA’s aviation services staff through the Pilot Information Center. Test your knowledge.
Question: Is it true that there is an online course that will substitute for the flight review required by 14 CFR 61.56?
Answer: Not exactly. If somebody talks about such a course, what he or she may be referring to is the FAA’s Wings program. Officially named the Pilot Proficiency Award Program, the program was established by the FAA to promote flight safety. There are 20 phases in the program and each phase requires a pilot to complete certain tasks. The tasks consist of specific ground training topics as well as flight maneuvers. If you have completed a phase of the Wings program since the beginning of the twenty-fourth month before the month in which you wish to act as pilot in command, then you need not complete a flight review.
