If you’ve been wanting to take your flying to a more competitive level, the Sport Air Racing League’s 2013 season is under way.
The league promotes open course air racing for experimental, production, and vintage military aircraft. Aimed at pilots “who do not have the deep pockets to race at Reno, even in the Sport Class,” the league promotes mostly one-day events ranging from 100 to 400 miles in length. Rather than zipping around a short, multiple-lap, closed course, racers are started at timed intervals in a fastest-first starting order. This provides a safe racing environment, particularly for those who are new to the sport, according to the website. It also gives owners an opportunity to put those speed mods to the test.
Racers are required to be SARL members. However, if you would like to compete in one event, you can become a provisional member for $10. One provisional membership is permitted per racer per season.
Races are planned for Terrell Municipal Airport in Terrell, Texas, on May 25; Grove Municipal Airport, Grove, Okla., on June 1; and Union County Airport, Marysville, Ohio, on June 29. A 100-nm SARL race on June 7 will be part of the International Air Meet at Durant Regional-Eaker Field, Durant, Okla. That event will include a 600-nm race that takes place June 8.
