FAA decides to keep Bridgeport VOR

FAA officials, in a May 8 memo, announced a decision not to shut down a VOR that serves 14 airports in the area.

The VOR, also equipped with distance-measuring equipment and remote-communications-outlet capabilities, was slated for decommissioning earlier this year. A review found the facility is structurally sound and in good working order, and further that it would “not be prudent, nor in the interest of the (National Airspace System) to decommission” the facility “at this time.”

The VOR is integral to various instrument procedures, and AOPA joined pilots in the area who expressed concern that decommissioning would be disruptive. Pilots and AOPA were particularly concerned about the impact on many instrument procedures serving 14 area airports that include the Bridgeport VOR as a waypoint; there are no alternatives available that could replace this particular navaid.

In the memo, the agency said it is understood by all parties that a proposal to decommission the Bridgeport VOR may be made once again in the future.
