Fun in the Southern California sun

Chino Airport, home of the Sept. 20 AOPA Fly-In, has a rich heritage. It was built in the early 1940s as a training base for Army Air Corps pilots, and the airport still sees a lot of active World War II-era aircraft, whether flown by individual owners based there or one of the field's two world-class aviation museums. Flo's Airport Café, where the area's agricultural and aviation interests intersect, also has plenty of history—it has operated on the field for 50 years. Read more...

Judgment, and the day

A day after getting checked out in a Schleicher ASK 21 two-place fiberglass sailplane, Opinion Leaders blogger Amy Laboda writes that she was "aching to fly." But the winds that day were gusting near 40 knots. The towplane and pilot sat at the end of the runway, waiting for a signal from her as to whether she would fly. Did she decide to go up, or wait to fly another day?

Take me out to the airport

There's nothing like a family fun day out. A recent fly-in at Tazewell County Airport in Virginia showed that the airport can be the place to be for the whole family. "And I'm not talking about a couple of family members tolerating it while one (the pilot) runs around like a kid at Christmas," writes AOPA Director of eMedia Alyssa J. Miller. "I'm talking about families lounging around, listening to music, playing, laughing, and spending quality time together like hanging out at an airport and watching airplanes is the most natural, inviting pastime in the world."
