Now that the summer season has started, things get slower and there’s more time for leisure. So this week I take a look at five fun aviation game apps that will keep you busy until Labor Day. These are not endorsements of any app.
Sky Aces 2 ($0.99 in iTunes and $1.00 in Google Play)—Tap your inner World War II ace with this smartphone app. Be a fighter pilot and fight tanks, troops, aircraft, cannons, and more.
Helidroid 3D (free in iTunes, Google Play, and the Windows Store)—You are the helicopter pilot in this smartphone app. Gather water from a swimming pool to put out a house fire, use rotors to blow out candles, and race another helicopter in this app.
Aeroplane Parking 3D (free in Google Play)—Work on your airliner parking skills with this smartphone app. The goal is to park airliners at the gate without having too many of them pile up.
X-Plane for iPad ($9.99 in iTunes)—While this iPad app is fun, it’s also used by companies like NASA and Boeing for simulator flight training. The app features high-resolution scenery, 3-D buildings, realistic instrument panels, and the ability to download 40 aircraft (from the Cessna 172 to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner).
Pilot! (free in iTunes)—This app, optimized for the iPhone 5, allows users to fly different types of aircraft, and deliver passengers and cargo. Download more aircraft types by paying $0.99 to $8.99.
Do you have a fuel, FBO, or aviation services apps that you enjoy using? Please pass them, along with any other apps, here. And to make sure that Android users continue to be represented in this column, please keep the Google Play app recommendations coming! The complete list of apps I’ve highlighted since October 2012 is here.
