'A thrill through my veins'

The beauty from 1,700 feet

LovelessName: Mikaylah Loveless
Age: 17
Event: Solo
Where: Spinks Airport (FWS), Fort Worth, Texas
Airplane: Cessna 172

I’ve been working on my solo for quite a time. Gone through three CFIs and a down time where I thought I would never solo. But on a gorgeous day, my flight instructor asked to be dropped off at the FBO. She told me to go fly around the pattern three times and pick her up. I felt a thrill go through my veins, then couldn’t believe I was finally going solo! All I can say is, I never knew how beautiful things really looked from only 1,700 feet up.

GoldsteinName: Noah Goldstein
Age: 19
Event: Solo
Where: New Bedford Regional Airport (EWB), Massachusetts
Airplane: Cessna 172

I knew the solo was coming. My instructor and I did three takeoffs and landings. He had me taxi to an FBO where he sent me off to do three takeoffs and landings on my own. I was very nervous, but once I added the throttle and made the calls “airspeed is live, gauges are in the green” and called out my airspeeds, the nervousness went away. It was a beautiful day to fly and I couldn’t ask for a better time to do so.

DrosnesName: Paul Drosnes
Age: 26
Event: Private pilot checkride
Where: Currituck County Regional Airport (ONX), Currituck, North Carolina
Airplane: Cessna 172M

I’m a teacher in North Carolina, and I hope to do my part to encourage more people to learn to fly. I have been training with CFI Gary Ambrose and ground instructors Margaret Donohoe (my mother) and Tim Cage. The day of the checkride, I knew I was ready. Anyone who knows my mother knows that, when flying with her, every day is a checkride. I was thrilled to have the chance to demonstrate all that I have learned.
