Fly-ins: Come to Camarillo

First fly-in of 2017 offers new levels of learning

By Julie Summers Walker

Students and certificated pilots will find great opportunities at AOPA’s 2017 fly-ins to enhance their skills.

“We have an intense focus on the educational value of the fly-ins,” said Chris Eads, AOPA director of outreach and events. “Coupled with fun, food, and camaraderie, the fly-ins are a wonderful chance for pilots to immerse themselves in the avocation they love.”

Following a $7 pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., the free Saturday events include opportunities to learn from experts in their field of flying. At Camarillo, California (CMA), attendees will delight and learn from AOPA’s veteran columnist Barry Schiff as he presents a seminar on his 60 years of flying and the lessons he has learned. Other notable seminars include upset recovery, BasicMed (see “Medical Reform is a Reality,” March 2017 Flight Training), and ways to improve your flying skills. AOPA is also introducing a seminar on drone flying, from regulations to resources.

On Friday night, there’s a Barnstormers Party with music and food, as well as introductions to the vast array of exhibitors (opening early this year and hosting a Friday evening happy hour) and a display of all kinds of aircraft to share with your family. On Saturday enjoy a catered luncheon and updates from AOPA senior staff, including President Mark Baker.

The Camarillo fly-in kicks off the year of exciting AOPA Fly-Ins on April 28 and 29, followed by Norman, Oklahoma (OUN), September 8 and 9; Groton, Connecticut (GON), October 6 and 7; and Tampa, Florida (TPF), October 27 and 28. AOPA will also attend Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, Florida (April 4 through 9), offering a lineup of educational seminars in the AOPA Program Pavilion, and EAA AirVenture (July 24 through 30).
