A weeklong session will take place June 3 through 9 at Lancaster Regional Airport in Lancaster, Texas. GIFT Academy offers participants up to two flights daily and ongoing ground school throughout the week.

GIFT Academy was launched in 2011 by CFIs Mary Latimer and Tamara Latimer Griffith.  The nonprofit program aims to help women get started in their flight training, make extra progress forward, or tackle hurdles that may be hindering their aviation progress. The event also offers mentoring, peer-to-peer learning, and a variety of instructors with different teaching techniques and aircraft.

The cost of the event is $1,500, which includes 10 hours of dual instruction, lunches, and ground school. A $300 deposit is required by May 10 to reserve a space. Scholarships may be available.

A second event will be held Oct. 7 through 13 at Wilbarger County Airport in Vernon, Texas. For women ages 18 and up, the event offers an extensive ground school. Teaching will be adjusted to meet the needs and goals of the group. Additionally, instructors will help students to understand the basics of flight, dispel myths and fears, provide resources for passing the knowledge test, and prepare for a practical test. Other topics include weight and balance, weather, aerodynamics, regulations, and airspace.

There is no charge for ground or flight instruction. Aircraft rental starts at $45 per hour, plus the cost of fuel. Attendees will need to purchase books and pay for hotel accommodations, as well as some meals. Lunch is provided at the event.

To reserve a spot or for additional information on either GIFT event, see the website.
