Sporty's launches Stratus 3 weather receiver
Sporty’s has released the Stratus 3, the latest generation of its bestselling weather receiver, at an introductory price well below that of the previous model.
The new edition includes in-demand features including subscription-free weather, dual-band Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) traffic, GPS, and backup attitude information. It also offers options for using additional apps, Sporty’s said in a news release.
The Stratus 3 debuts with an introductory price of $699, which is $200 less than Stratus 2S—but still offers enhancements such as a battery-saving automatic shutoff mode that senses the conclusion of a flight.
The Stratus 3 includes smart Wi-Fi, allowing pilots to use an iPad’s LTE connection while connected to the Stratus 3—a perfect way to deal with last-minute flight plan changes on the ground. Pilots can hide the Stratus Wi-Fi network, or make it password-protected.
Stratus 3 can also take advantage of new features from the FAA and ForeFlight, and will be capable of receiving new ADS-B data products when they are available later this year, including echo tops; lightning, icing, and turbulence forecasts; Center Weather Advisories; and G-Airmets.
“ADS-B traffic is also better than ever, with a 3D display of nearby targets in ForeFlight’s updated synthetic vision view,” Sporty’s said.
Stratus 3 was designed to integrate seamlessly with ForeFlight. Complete status information is available on the moving map page and includes ADS-B reception, AHRS performance, and battery status. Stratus Replay allows ForeFlight users to turn off their iPad screens without missing weather updates. A built-in flight data recorder automatically tracks every flight.
Stratus 3 also supports a variety of other aviation apps on iOS and Android using the industry standard GDL 90 protocol, allowing displays of weather, traffic, GPS position, and attitude from Stratus 3.
Stratus 3 comes with a dash mount, charging cable, wall outlet charging plug, and Stratus Pilot Guide. It will be on display at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, July 23 through 29 at Booth No. 3147 in Hangar C, and at Sporty’s tent, just outside of Hangar B.
