When Martin missed the boat
One look at the 3,000-horsepower engine and huge four-bladed propeller tells the story: The Martin AM–1 Mauler was built to lift heavy loads for carrier-based combat missions, and reportedly set an unofficial record for a single-engine airplane in that regard. It was also, unfortunately, built to bounce, making it difficult for the dive-bomber's tailhook to connect with a carrier's arresting gear—just one of numerous technical issues that gave the aircraft, which first flew in 1944, a brief service life before finding its way to reserve units and, ultimately, museums.
Final Exam
Question

I have a private pilot certificate with an airplane rating. I hadn't flown for four years when I decided to add a glider rating. My instructor says I need a flight review—in an airplane—to solo the glider. Is that right?
Answer
As strange as it may seem, that is correct. A flight review can only be accomplished in aircraft for which you hold a rating, and you need one to fly solo or as pilot in command. Because you do not yet hold a glider rating, to solo a glider, you first need to accomplish a flight review in an airplane.

Did you know that student pilots who join AOPA are three times more likely to complete their flight training?
